I'm A Young Adult Your Voices Ruth What cancer were you diagnosed with? Desmoid tumour What helped you to thrive? It’s all pretty daunting but Trekstock has allowed me to focus on something slightly more interesting and less depressing than the obvious! Ruth' Story I first heard about Trekstock on a snowy Christmas Eve in Yorkshire, some friends of mine had done the Mount Kenya trek. I thought it sounded great but didn't realise that a couple of years later, I’d be looking it up because of my own health. I was diagnosed with a Desmoid tumour in my abdomen during my final year of medical school. It’s a really rare condition, only 1-2 people per million, which means I had to travel to London to see a specialist. I took some time out from work once it became too big to manage and had it removed but it recurred immediately. It’s now about the size of a coconut and sits just next to my belly button. The pain it causes and the limits to my activity mean that the next step is chemo. The biggest adjustment has been learning how to be a patient instead of a doctor, especially right at the start of my career. It’s all pretty daunting but Trekstock has allowed me to focus on something slightly more interesting and less depressing than the obvious!
