What cancer were you diagnosed with?

secondary Stage 4 breast cancer

What age were you diagnosed?

What has helped you to thrive?

Feeling lucky in an unlucky situation. This is due to my family, friends and the wonderful NHS teams who have looked after me so far on this journey. Listening to music, wearing nice clothes and makeup, eating good food and trying to do ‘normal’ things have also helped! I can’t wait to be able to exercise once I’m fully recovered from surgery!

Amelia's Story

In July 2020 my life was turned upside down. Upper back pain I had suffered from and self-medicated for since November eventually became unbearable and I started to get arm spasms which led to loss of all control in my right arm and hand. Up until then I had been loving life and was enjoying travelling to as many places as possible, my job and spending time with friends and family. I was also looking forward to our wedding which had already been postponed due to Covid-19.

I was referred for an urgent MRI scan for what I thought would be a quick 20 minute scan on July 22nd but ended up with me not being allowed home due to spinal fractures and a discovery of tumours in my left breast and spine. I was diagnosed with secondary stage 4 breast cancer but I had to first undergo spinal surgery to stabilise my spine and am now recovering. I begin radiotherapy next week and start anti-cancer medication the week after. I am looking forward to being able to travel again and our third-time lucky wedding in May 2021!
