What has helped you to thrive?

I got involved with Sarcoma UK and Clatterbridge Cancer Centre. I enjoyed volunteering and giving time back to those who had helped me. I met a lot of new people and made new friends. I also went to my sarcoma support group (and still do!)

Emma's Story

I was diagnosed in 2012 with a 7.7lb tumour in my thigh. After gruelling surgery, I then had to cope with living with a disability. I didn’t know if it was going to be long term or temporary. Radiotherapy followed. After five months leave, I returned to work. Different. Work was different. I was different. I wish I had taken time off to prepare myself mentally.

In 2013 (exactly a year post diagnosis) I discovered the sarcoma had spread to both of my lungs. Heartbroken, I started chemotherapy. It was awful as I had to stay in hospital for three nights/four days each cycle and being 30, I missed out on so many nights out! After chemo I had surgery to remove the tumours (along with the middle part of my lung) and lived blissfully for almost 18 months.

In 2015 I was told I had a small tumour on my lung again. I felt defeated. The tumour was 2mm so surgery wasn’t an option as it wasn’t ‘big enough’. I made the decision to ‘Watch and Wait’. After 12 weeks I was rescanned and the tumour was now 5mm and I was ecstatic as this meant I could have surgery.

I’ve now been in the clear for 6.5 years now and hope that this continues.
