RENEW: Take That Step

Firstly well done for taking that first step to keep active.  You should be mighty proud of yourself. 

Have you recently been diagnosed with cancer and not sure how to exercise safely now? Are you going through treatment and lost the motivation to be active? Then Take a Step is for you! Whatever your current fitness level or exercise history, we know how hard it can be to exercise regularly, and we are here to help you get moving safely, and with lots of support. 

You don't need us to tell you that receiving a cancer diagnosis is shit and we know that keeping active when just diagnosed or in the early nightmare of it all may be the last thing on your mind, but it will help you so much, we promise you.  And we're right here to support you to take that first step with a community of others who get it too.

If you've recently been diagnosed or are currently in treatment, you can still get active!

Who is it for:

Anyone in their 20s and 30s who have just been diagnosed with any type of cancer at any stage, are pre- treatment or have just started treatment.

Now What? 

To get you started and to make sure everything is safe we need to know a bit about you and where you are at. That's why we get one of your medical team to fill the below form in. 

If you can't access the medical referral form then your medical team can fill out the word copy and then email it straight back to [email protected]



And we will need you to sign both of these ones yourself as well:

What to expect? 

  • Fortnightly 45 mins online drop-in sessions with up to 12 other young adults who've also just been diagnosed
  • 6;30pm on a WEDNESDAY night 
  • A safe space to chat afterwards 
  • Sessions will be low-level exercises that help build strength and stamina ie. no high impact exercises here! 
  • Sessions will get your heart rate up and leave you a little sweaty but will be at a level that works for all

Answering your questions:

  • Worried about doing something wrong? the instructor will check in regularly
  • If you don't feel ok just stop and rest - you do you! 
  • What if I can't attend a session? - No commitment needed - come as and when you can
  • What if I can't do that exercise? - Modifications for every move will be offered
  • What if I have questions in the sessions? Don't worry, you don't have to ask them in front of everyone you can use the chat feature and select send only to the instructor. They will reply to you directly or may talk to the whole group if they think everyone will benefit.

The word physical activity puts me off - what does it mean? 

All it means is moving your body in any way you want to, this can also be through activities we all do in our daily lives.  We're just here to give you one way you can do that, that can help you feel stronger so you can keep up all those activities that are important to you as much as you can when you're going through treatment. 

What do I need? 

  • Just be you - no judgment here
  • Completed referral form by your healthcare professional or GP this means that the instructor will know all about you and your medical history before the class
  • Working Wifi (well as much as it can!)
  • Enough space in your home/garden/ patio so you can move about comfortably
  • Loose clothing ( no need to go out and buy high tech sports gear)
  • Water 
  • Mat/towel/ rug
  • Household items to use for weights - beans/tins of tomatoes that sort of thing)

I am excited to be a part of the team, running the Renew exercise programmes virtually. In such unprecedented times, to be able to come together online, support each other and exercise as a group is amazing and I'm pleased, I can be a part of this and help others. I am passionate about making exercise accessible to all, tailored to the individual even in a group setting.My goal as a trainer is to give people the confidence to let me help them build trust in their bodies again and help them move in a way that is best for them, during or after treatment. Helping them to build up strength, mobility, balance and all-round fitness gradually and safely without worsening symptoms of cancer and treatment like fatigue and pain. Looking forward to meeting you.

We suggest you keep your video on so the instructor can just check you are doing things safely, but if you just don't feel like it, that's fine too.... If you don't want to keep looking at yourself ( we don't love that either) throughout you can turn off the self view...
