WHAT'S SO GOOD ABOUT EXERCISE ANYWAY? 

There is a growing body of evidence and awareness of both the physical and psychological benefits of exercise for patients during treatment and post-treatment.

HERE'S THE SCIENCE BIT:

Research shows keeping active can:

  • Help you cope with the effects of treatment when they kick in
  • Help reduce the severity and occurrence of treatment side effects
  • Improve your mental health  
  • Help you focus on your body's ability to do things NOT what it is going through. 
  • Improve cancer-related fatigue that inevitably comes when going through treatment and living with the effects.
  • Help improve your sleep
  • Help improve your quality of life
  • Improve heart health, bone health and strength and flexibility
  • Helps motivate and brings you a community

What should I be doing? 

The government guidelines say that everyone should be aiming for 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week or 90 mins of strenuous exercise. We know that sounds a lot but all it means is keeping your body moving at a pace where you can just about hold a conversation. But build up to this slowly and don't push yourself especially when going through treatment. Remember to be kind to yourself, pace yourself and most importantly listen to your body.  

They advise this should include weight-bearing exercises such as weights as well as one session on flexibility.

  • Cycling
  • Swimming
  • Brisk walking
